Star Wars Unlimited Rotation Explained: What’s Changing

The Star Wars Unlimited Trading Card Game is entering an important new phase with the introduction of set rotation. Star Wars Unlimited Rotation system is a normal and healthy part of many competitive card games. Designed to keep gameplay balanced, accessible, and exciting as new expansions are released.

If you’re wondering what Star Wars Unlimited rotation means, which sets are affected, and how it will impact your decks, this guide breaks it all down in a clear and player-friendly way.

What Is Set Rotation in Star Wars Unlimited?

Set Rotation is a format change where older sets are removed from standard competitive play. As a result, this limits the card pool used in official tournaments and organized play formats, ensuring that the metagame doesn’t become too large or overly complex.

For Star Wars Unlimited, rotation helps:

  • Keep the game approachable for new players
  • Prevent older cards from dominating indefinitely
  • Encourage creative deckbuilding with newer sets

However, set rotation does not mean cards become unusable—it simply means they may no longer be legal in certain formats.

How Rotation Impacts Deckbuilding

Rotation encourages players to rethink deck construction and explore new strategies. When older cards leave the format:

  • Staples may be replaced by newer alternatives
  • Archetypes may evolve or disappear
  • New leaders and mechanics can shine

As a result, this creates a healthier, more dynamic meta where innovation matters just as much as experience. In addition, Fantasy Flight Games will have more flexibility in game design by removing outdated card abilities or reprinting cards into a new rotation to allow continued play.

When Does Star Wars Unlimited Rotation Begin?

The seventh set for Star Wars Unlimited, A Lawless Time, is releasing on March 27, 2026. This set release will also kick off the very first rotation in Star Wars Unlimited.

Which Sets Will Rotate Out?

Jump To Lightspeed (Set 4) introduced the addition of a Rotation Symbol symbolized by a bordered letter of the alphabet. Fantasy Flight Games has decided that every rotation symbol will consist of three sets. Starting with Jump to Lightspeed, Rotation Symbol “A” will consist of the following sets:

  • Jump to Lightspeed
  • Legends of the Force
  • Secrets of Power

Accordingly, all previous sets that do not have a Rotation Symbol will be rotated out with the release of A Lawless Time. Those sets are:

  • Spark of Rebellion
  • Shadows of the Galaxy
  • Twilight of the Republic

Consequently, A Lawless Time is expected to be the first set to have the Rotation Symbol “B”.

Will All Cards In A Set Be Rotated Out?

All cards in a set that has been rotated out can no longer be used in competitive play. However, many cards have been reprinted in a newer set to allow their use to continue.

Prepare For Takeoff

For example, “Prepare for Takeoff” as first printed in Spark of Rebellion that will be rotated out in March. However, this card was reprinted in Jump to Lightspeed that allows it to continue to be played in competitive play.

What Formats Are Affected by Rotation?

Rotation primarily impacts standard competitive formats used for official events and tournaments.

However:

  • Casual play is unaffected
  • Twin Suns is unaffected and will remain as a “non-rotating” format
  • Future expanded or eternal formats may allow rotated sets

In fact, if you enjoy relaxed or narrative gameplay, your collection remains just as valuable.

Launch of the Eternal Format

The first set rotation will also introduce the launch of the Eternal format where all released sets for Star Wars Unlimited will be legal. Fantasy Flight Games as stated they will offer official Organized Play support for this format. At the moment, details are scarce, but we expect to learn more when A Lawless Time releases in March.

Should You Still Buy Rotating Sets?

Yes—especially if you:

  • Play casually
  • Enjoy deck experimentation
  • Participate in non-rotating formats such as Twin Suns

Rotating sets still hold value for learning the game, collecting, and future format support. Many players also enjoy revisiting older decks outside of competitive events.
